A new study by J. Campana and Associates reveals that U.S. school-related information security data breaches account for nearly one-third of all the information security data breaches reported. The Education Sector, which comprises as little as 0.6% of the total number of U.S. entities, reported a disproportionate number of information security breaches. The State discovered the privacy breach on Monday of this week and immediately went public, thus potentially increasing the risk of identity theft to residents. This is not only the second time the State was involved in a “Super Breach” but also the second time the State prematurely advertised to fraudsters that they could easily find Social Security Numbers in throughout the postal system and in the trash.

In December 2008, The U.S. Department of Education published the final amendments to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Among several important changes and clarifications to FERPA, the publication also included recommendations for safeguarding education records, which parallel privacy and information security best practices. If your business or organization accepts credit cards and processes or stores credit card information electronically, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) could help you minimize your liability should that information ever be compromised. But first, you have to meet the PCI-DSS compliance standards. If you don't comply, your enterprise is subject to significant additional liabilities in terms of fines and restitution expenses imposed by the PCI. You have to comply even if you only process a few credit cards each year.In essence the PCI-DSS is a privacy and information security standard that is meant to prevent financial identity theft.
