If your business or organization accepts credit cards and processes or stores credit card information electronically, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) could help you minimize your liability should that information ever be compromised. But first, you have to meet the PCI-DSS compliance standards. If you don't comply, your enterprise is subject to significant additional liabilities in terms of fines and restitution expenses imposed by the PCI. You have to comply even if you only process a few credit cards each year.In essence the PCI-DSS is a privacy and information security standard that is meant to prevent financial identity theft.
